Garden furniture takes a different kind of punishment to fencing — it's moved, sat on, rained on, and often left out over winter. Osmo's exterior oils are ideal because they penetrate and protect without the brittleness of a surface coating that will eventually crack and peel.

The best time to treat garden furniture is early spring — before the summer season, when the wood is clean and dry from winter storage. Treating it now means it’s fully cured and protected before it sees heavy use. Treating it at the end of summer when it’s already weathered is playing catch-up.
If you’re bringing furniture out of storage and it looks dry or grey, that’s the signal to treat it before you start using it.
New furniture
New hardwood garden furniture — teak, oak, iroko — often comes untreated or with a brief factory oil that isn’t sufficient for UK weather. Apply Osmo Garden Furniture Oil or UV-Protection Oil as soon as possible after purchase.

Clean if needed
New furniture from reputable suppliers should be clean. If there's any surface dust or residue, wipe down with a clean dry cloth.

Apply first coat
Use a brush or cloth. Work the oil into all surfaces — tops, undersides, legs, and joints. These hidden areas are where moisture gets in first.

Allow to dry — 10–12 hours
Leave in a dry, ventilated space. Avoid applying in direct sun or if rain is forecast within 12 hours.

Apply second coat
Two coats on new furniture gives full protection going into the season.
Don't forget the undersides
The underside of table tops and the base of legs are the most vulnerable areas — they sit closest to the ground where moisture collects. Most people only oil the visible surfaces. Treat everything, particularly on new furniture before it first goes outside.
Weathered or neglected furniture
Wood left untreated over a full British winter will often turn grey and feel rough. This is UV damage and moisture cycling in and out of the wood. For most furniture it’s entirely reversible — but the preparation matters.

Clean thoroughly with Wood Reviver
Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel is effective on biological growth and grey weathering — it restores the natural colour and opens up the grain. Apply, scrub, rinse off.

Allow to dry fully
24–48 hours minimum after using Wood Reviver. The surface must be completely dry before any oil goes on.

Light sand if needed
If the surface feels rough after drying, a light sand with 120 grit will smooth it and improve oil penetration.

Apply two coats of oil
Osmo Garden Furniture Oil or UV-Protection Oil. Allow 10–12 hours between coats.
Good preparation is the difference between a finish that lasts two years and one that lasts four. Clean thoroughly before any product goes on.
Choosing between natural and tinted
For garden furniture the choice between clear and tinted comes down to preference and UV exposure. A tinted version will extend the life of the treatment significantly on furniture that sits in full sun. Osmo’s natural wood tones are subtle — they warm the wood slightly without dramatically changing the colour.
For teak specifically, a dedicated teak oil or clear Garden Furniture Oil is usually right — teak has a naturally high oil content and absorbs less than other species. For oak and European hardwoods, the standard range works well.
Tinted outdoors = longer lasting
Even the lightest natural tint contains pigment that acts as a UV barrier. A tinted finish on furniture in full sun will outlast a clear one significantly — the same principle as the fence guide.
Annual maintenance
Once properly treated, ongoing care is simple. Clean at the start and end of each season. When the finish looks dry or water stops beading on the surface, apply a single maintenance coat — no sanding required. Most well-treated furniture needs a maintenance coat every one to two years depending on exposure.
Winter storage
Store furniture clean and fully dry. Storing damp wood in a confined space encourages mould and can cause warping. A fresh coat of oil before storage gives it the best chance of coming out in good condition in spring.
