OSMO OIL TIPS
- Clear oils can darken the appearance of the wood. To retain the light character of oakits recommened to use Osmo Raw 3044.
- Some woods are highly porous and require an especially thin application, as a result the drying time can be increased.
- Application of second coat can be done as soon as the first coat has dried. However, it is important to wait approx. 24hrs when applying colour for the first coat, before applying Polyx®-Oil as the top coat. Please note: When applying a white colour as the first coat, we recommend that you use Osmo tints 3040 – white, as the top coat to avoid the risk of yellowing.
- Recommended application is 35ml/m²
- A base coat of Osmo Wood Protector is recommended for use in bathrooms or kitchens.
- Multi-purpose cleaners such as washing up liquids and detergents are highly detrimental to the finished surface and is not recommended to be used as discolouration or staining may be possible.
- Other household cleaning products such as vanish, bleach, baking soda etc. are likely to cause severe discolouration or staining.
- Be cautious if applying 3062 Clear Matt over a dark coloured surface. The matting agents within 3062 may produce a white mist or powdery effect upon the surface. It is recommended to apply 3065 Semi-Matt if a sheen is not desired. Always trial apply!
Original or Rapid — which is right for you?
The short answer: if you’re doing this yourself, Original is the one to go for.
With Original, you apply the first coat, leave it to dry overnight, and put the second coat on the following day. That overnight drying time is actually a good thing — it means you can take your time, make sure the oil is going on evenly, and fix any patchy areas before they dry. Most problems with Osmo oils come from rushing, and Original simply doesn’t let you rush.
Rapid is designed for professional floor layers who need to get two coats done in a single day. The gap between coats is around 4–6 hours rather than overnight — useful if you’re working to a tight deadline, but it does mean you need to work quickly and confidently from the moment you open the tin.
One thing that surprises people: whichever version you choose, the floor still needs around two weeks to fully harden. It’ll be fine for walking on within 24 hours, but hold off on putting rugs down or dragging furniture back into place until that two weeks is up. A floor that feels dry isn’t the same as a floor that’s fully cured.
A note on colour: Polyx Original will make your wood look a little darker — think of how wood looks when it gets wet, and that’s roughly the permanent effect. On oak this is quite noticeable. If you want your floor to stay as close as possible to its current natural colour, have a look at Osmo Polyx Raw 3044 before you decide.

Re-treated a large solid oak dining table and the results were even better than my expectations, possibly even better than new. I had some good advice from Sue at Vanilla and the restoration was very easy. Machine flatted the top with 120 grit, wiped clean with mentholated spirits, 1 coat of polyx applied with Osmo microfibre roller, left to dry then a light de-nip.
