More coats than a floor. More exposure than almost anything else in the house.
A wood worktop takes direct contact, moisture, and heat every day. Here's how to protect a new one properly — and bring a tired one back to life.

Wood worktops look beautiful, but they take a lot of punishment — water, heat, cutting, cleaning products. Osmo Top Oil is specifically formulated for kitchen worktops and wooden surfaces that see direct contact and moisture. Applied correctly, it gives excellent protection and is straightforward to maintain and repair.
Worktops need more coats than floors
This is the thing that catches people out most often. A floor gets two thin coats of Polyx Oil and you’re done. A worktop is different — it sees far more direct contact, moisture, heat, and wear, so it needs more protection built up over time.
When applying with a cloth, expect to do five or six coats to achieve proper protection. This isn’t unusual; it’s how the product is designed to work. Each coat soaks in and cures before you add the next, building up progressively. Try to shortcut this and you’ll end up with a surface that marks easily and needs retreating much sooner.
Under-application is the common mistake here
On floors the risk is putting too much on. On worktops applied by cloth, the risk is the opposite — not enough coats. Five to six is the minimum with cloth application. Give each coat sufficient drying time before applying the next.
New worktop — first-time treatment
New solid wood worktops should be treated on all surfaces before fitting if possible — the underside and edges are often neglected but are just as important for preventing moisture ingress and warping.

Sand to 120 grit
Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust. Sand with the grain.

Apply the first coat with a lint-free cloth
Work the oil into the wood in the direction of the grain. The first coat will absorb quickly — this is normal. Apply thinly and evenly.

Allow to dry — minimum 8 hours
Don't rush this. The oil needs to cure before you apply the next coat.

Repeat for coats 2 through 5 or 6
Each subsequent coat will absorb less than the previous one — this is the oil building up in the surface. Continue until the wood feels properly sealed and the surface has a consistent appearance.

Allow to cure fully before heavy use
The worktop needs two weeks to fully cure. During that time treat it gently — avoid leaving wet items on the surface and don't cut directly on it.
Reviving a tired worktop
If the surface is looking dry, has light scratches, or water is no longer beading on it, a maintenance coat of Osmo Top Oil will restore it without stripping back to bare wood.
Clean the surface thoroughly first — Osmo Wash & Care or a clean damp cloth is fine. Allow to dry completely, then apply one or two coats of Osmo Top Oil by cloth. You’ll see the wood absorb the oil in the areas that need it most; once the finish is consistent and the surface feels smooth, you’re done.
Storing the tin
Osmo Top Oil comes with a screw-top lid. Wipe the rim clean before replacing the lid — oil residue will glue it shut. Once opened, store somewhere frost-free with the lid firmly on; it will keep for another year or two. If you have a small amount left, consider decanting into a smaller sealed container or placing the tin inside a zip-lock bag to reduce air exposure.
Ongoing care
Day to day, clean with a damp cloth — avoid harsh detergents which will strip the finish. Osmo Wash & Care is the right product for regular cleaning. The finish is water-resistant but not waterproof, so wipe up spills promptly rather than leaving standing water.
When the surface starts to look dry or loses its water-beading, a single maintenance coat is all you need — no sanding required.
